HL- Philadelphia Hosts 2nd Annual Black LAX Classic

Hosted by HL-Philly on a bright and spirited Friday on February 9th, the Black LAX Classic (BLC) was not just a gathering, but a vibrant celebration of Black lacrosse history and its burgeoning growth in the heart of Philly. Held at Olney High School, the BLC brought the community together through talent, legacy, and unity.

The Black LAX Classic has rapidly become a cornerstone event for middle and high school students in our area, aspiring to elevate the game of lacrosse while paying homage to the remarkable contributions of Black athletes to the sport. This year, we witnessed an overwhelming turnout of over 175 students who took to the field with fervor. Students were divided into teams named after iconic Black lacrosse players. This deliberate naming was a gesture to educate and inspire our young athletes about the giants on whose shoulders they stand, making each match not just a game but a lesson in history and perseverance.

The Haverford College Men’s Lacrosse team and LaSalle College Women’s Lacrosse team volunteered to support the BLC as referees and assistant coaches and Philadelphia Council Member Anthony Phillips (District 9) also joined in to watch the students play and shared his reflections on the importance of community and learning from one another. At the end of the day, students received awards for their commitment to building up their teammates, bringing energy and enthusiasm, and honoring the game of lacrosse.

The Second Annual Black LAX Classic was a testament to the power of sports to transcend boundaries, educate, and unite. As we reflect on the success of the day, we are filled with gratitude for the players, volunteers, families, donors, and supporters who made this event possible. Looking forward, we are excited about the future of Black lacrosse in Philly and are committed to continuing this tradition of celebration, education, and empowerment.
