Harlem Lacrosse Rocks the Bell

At Harlem Lacrosse, the fun doesn’t stop during Spring Break. Our Program Directors plan and execute a series of daily workshops, activities and trips that help our students to remain engaged and connected. From a teambuilding activity scaling treetops and ziplining through forest greens to opportunities to travel to college campuses to watch collegiate level play, our students continue to benefit from our active engagement in their lives.

A popular trip this Spring was taking a ‘Beyond the Bell’ tour, a local company that specializes in providing ‘inclusive historical tours of Philadelphia highlighting marginalized communities, peoples and histories’. The Olney Elementary middle school girls were able to participate in Beyond the Bell’s “Badass Women’s Tour”. Along with Coach Amanda and their tour guide, Rebecca, our players learned about the many different and incredible female entrepreneurs, doctors, politicians, artists & activists that helped shape the city of Philadelphia into what it is today. Students learned about the buildings, statues and shops that powerful women built and/or influenced. Our Olney E girls were incredibly engaged, inspired and did a great job asking a variety of in-depth questions.

If you don’t know how the Liberty Bell fits historically into the abolitionist movement, you may want to follow in the footsteps of Coach Aidan and our Finletter boys and participate in the Beyond the (Liberty) Bell tour. This tour focuses on telling the history of the City’s most popular attractions by addressing myths and highlighting the voices of our ‘forgotten founders’ - history that is not always available in the school textbooks. The team was excited to learn about Flemish bricking. Now, any time they see it, they point it out and share what they learned. The team learned a valuable lesson -what can seem boring on the surface can actually be fun, interesting and very important. We are grateful to Beyond the Bell Tours for supporting us and waiving the tour fees. It was great to see our teams make connections from one historical fact to the next!
