About

Harlem Lacrosse is a sports-based youth development organization that supports students through educational coaching, lacrosse instruction and competition, social-emotional enrichment, and post-secondary pathing services. We work with over 1,200 students across our five regions daily and year-round. We believe in depth over breadth, and play the long game!

At the center of our model is the Program Director, a full-time Harlem Lacrosse employee embedded in our host schools. The Program Director acts as a coach, mentor, counselor, and advocate for students, filling gaps left by limited school resources and providing critical individualized interventions and support.

Beyond my love of sports, I have a personal connection to Harlem Lacrosse’s mission. My father, who passed away in 2020, ran an organization that combined education and athletics to support inner-city kids. His program offered a learning center where students could complete their homework with tutor support, followed by golf lessons or practice on the course. The goal was to provide a safe, structured after-school environment, foster friendships and community, and—like Harlem Lacrosse—help kids access scholarships and college opportunities they otherwise might not have had.

I’ve gained a lot of lifelong friends and life-changing opportunities from the sport of lacrosse. I have greatly admired the impactful work Harlem Lacrosse does in spreading the love of the game and providing those same opportunities to young athletes.

As I prepare for the upcoming New York City Marathon, I am thrilled to run for a cause that deeply resonates with me. Lacrosse has given so much to my life, and I am happy to contribute to Harlem Lacrosse’s mission while also supporting the sport I cherish.

I have been a tutor with the FDA HL program for the past 3 years. Each week when I head up to the WeWork on 126th, I feel closer and closer to the players and the program. I have continued to build a bond with the program directors (Mike Murray and Dakota Allis). Recently, I was able to take time off from work so that I could join Dakota in driving the FDA team down to Baltimore for a weekend of scrimmages and watching college lacrosse.

As I reflect, I want to become more invested in Harlem Lacrosse beyond just sharing my time. I would like to take the next step in my commitment to Harlem Lacrosse by not only supporting the program financially but also by dedicating my marathon training and ultimate race accomplishment to this organization that means so much to me. Running the New York City Marathon on behalf of Harlem Lacrosse is an incredible way to give back and raise awareness for a program that has had such a meaningful impact on both the players and me.

Lacrosse, hard work, and camaraderie have shaped me into who I am today, and I believe Harlem Lacrosse stands for everything that I've been afforded and more. I previously played with former UVA HL leaders Owen Van Arsdale and Wyatt Melzer, and I remain inspired by the work they did with HL.

As a former Harlem Lacrosse volunteer during my time playing at Middlebury, I have seen firsthand the important work of Harlem Lacrosse in action. Through all the wins and losses, the greatest rewards from the sport were the relationships I made and the self-confidence I gained through doing hard things. Those benefits last far longer than my time on the field. I am extremely honored to fundraise and run for Harlem Lacrosse!

I am running on behalf of Harlem Lacrosse because of their mission: creating opportunities for children who face significant challenges, giving them structure, mentorship, and the confidence to succeed—on and off the field. Lacrosse is more than a sport for these students; it’s a pathway to education, leadership, and a brighter future.

By running the 2025 NYC Marathon for Harlem Lacrosse, I will not just be chasing my own goal—I will be helping these children chase theirs. I heavily believe in the power of sports to change lives because I’ve seen firsthand how discipline, teamwork, and community can make a lasting impact. Every dollar I raise and mile I run will be a step toward leveling the playing field for these young athletes.

I've been involved with Harlem Lacrosse in various capacities for almost a full decade, including running two marathons in support of HL. It was the most fulfilling experience, and I am thrilled to be a part of this year's team!

Harlem Lacrosse’s commitment to empowering young athletes resonates with me on a personal level. The game has given me so much, and I am committed to ensuring that others, regardless of their background, have the same access to its life-changing opportunities. Running the NYC Marathon in support of Harlem Lacrosse is a profound honor—an opportunity to champion a mission that aligns so closely with my own passion and purpose.

In short, lacrosse has been a large part of my family’s life, and I’d love the opportunity to give back.

From a lacrosse perspective, my youngest daughter has been playing lacrosse for many years and is currently a junior playing at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. The sport has provided her lifelong friends, our family a community to be a part of, and has given our daughter a foundation to help form the person she is today. In 2022, I ran the Boston Marathon for the Bill Belichick Foundation, one of the core focuses of which is providing lacrosse opportunities to communities in the Boston area that might otherwise not have them.

This year's New York Marathon is particularly important to me as my father passed away late in November 2023 from pulmonary fibrosis. He was an avid runner and actually ran the New York Marathon himself. I can’t think of a better way to honor him than running the marathon and raising funds/awareness for Harlem Lacrosse, which the sport of lacrosse has given so much to his granddaughter.

I am proud to be running the NYC Marathon in support of Harlem Lacrosse, an organization that empowers students in the classroom and on the field. I believe strongly in the Harlem Lacrosse’s mission and model, particularly as a foundation for students’ endeavors long beyond their time in the program. Many of my most meaningful memories and relationships were forged through lacrosse, and I believe in the game as a vehicle for paving success in all aspects of life.

I played lacrosse at Colby College, where I graduated in May of 2022. Several of my teammates came through the Harlem Lacrosse program, and I know how impactful the program can be. I also know what lacrosse has done for me and would like to support this work so that others can have similar opportunities.

I’ve been lucky enough to work for Harlem Lacrosse - Boston since moving here this fall.  It’s easily been the most rewarding experience of my life. I started out as an assistant coach with the Joseph Lee Middle School and the Mildred Ave Middle School, and this spring I’ll also be operating as the interim coach for the Boston Bulldogs high school girls program.

Harlem Lacrosse’s model is so complete, and its impact on the students is obvious. The girls that we work with every day are simply the best. They’re kind, hardworking, smart, and hilarious. It’s evident that lacrosse is bringing out the best in each of them, and their love for lacrosse grows every day. I am running for Harlem so that these students can continue to have the same great experience they’re already receiving, but with even more security and longevity towards their personal growth.

Lacrosse has been woven into the fabric of my family for generations. Our grandfather, the son of immigrants from Trinidad, grew up in Harlem and The Bronx, laying the foundation for a legacy that would shape our connection to the sport. My dad and his siblings all grew up playing lacrosse, and for many of them, it was a path to college. That passion was passed down— I played in college, and my brother now dedicates himself to coaching the next generation of players.

Because of this history, Harlem Lacrosse is more than just an organization to us—it represents opportunity, resilience, and the power of the sport to change lives. Our family is deeply committed to its mission. Running for Harlem Lacrosse is not just about the race; it’s about honoring my family's journey and ensuring that more young players have the same opportunities that shaped us.

As a former college D1 lacrosse player and former volunteer for Harlem Lacrosse, it would be an honor to run the 2025 NYC marathon in support of such an amazing organization. Lacrosse has been such a big part of my life and proven to be so much more than just a physical game, teaching me discipline, resilience, teamwork, confidence, and leadership. Volunteering for HL in middle school and high school provided me with the opportunity to share those lessons at a young age and learn the importance of giving back. It is so amazing to revisit this cause and support HL for all it has provided me. Getting the opportunity to run for an organization that helps youth find the same love for the sport and the lessons it gave me is an honor.

Harlem Lacrosse has been a big part of my life the past 6 years. I first started volunteering during my freshman year at Columbia. The transition to college was hard for me, the Harlem students were my light. When COVID canceled my 2020 and 2021 NCAA season, I had more time to pour into volunteering. I tutored HL students multiple times per week, and got to know them well. My students slowly opened up to me more about their dreams, their struggles, and everything in between. I knew I wanted to do more to help them. My junior and senior year, I applied for grants, coordinated events, and advertised HL volunteer opportunities to my teammates. Since my graduation, I joined the Baltimore Harlem Lacrosse board. Running the NYC marathon would be a new tool for me to continue raising awareness and money for an organization I care so deeply about. Running alone is difficult, I need something bigger than myself to keep my motivation for running going (especially during hills…), running for HL students and coaches will be my “why”.

Lacrosse has been a defining part of my life—from growing up playing the sport to competing as a women's lacrosse player at Colgate. I know firsthand the opportunities, confidence, and community that lacrosse can provide, but I also recognize that many young athletes don’t have the same access due to financial barriers.

That’s why I am running the New York City Marathon in support of Harlem Lacrosse, an organization that uses the sport and education to empower and inspire underserved youth. This cause is deeply personal to me, and I want to help ensure that every child, regardless of background, has the chance to experience the game that has meant so much to me.

I am so excited to run for Harlem Lacrosse! When I was right out of college, I started helping out with CT City lax clinics, and also with some of the clinics in the city. I love the concept behind this program, and I love to help grow the game and help underprivileged kids have the chance to get scholarships and dream big to go play lacrosse in college!!

My involvement with HL began during the summer of 10th grade, when I attended the Trilogy Lacrosse Camp at Goucher College. While at camp, I roomed with Jordany Baltazar and learned about his story. Jordany's experience with HL inspired me to engage with my own community in Virginia Beach, where I organized monthly lacrosse camps for students at the Achievable Dream Academy—an organization with a similar mission of providing a unique, challenging, and disciplined academic environment for children from elementary through high school.

After moving to New York nine months ago, I was eager to reconnect with HL. Fortunately, I have been able to spend time during the week supporting FDA students and players academically. Additionally, I recently partnered with our Brown Advisory office in Baltimore to facilitate the HL New York and Baltimore teams' attendance at the UNC versus Hopkins lacrosse game. Looking ahead, i am excited to contribute to Harlem Lacrosse by raising funds and running the 2025 NYC Marathon.
