Alumni Spotlight: Sergio Romero

When people talk about what makes Harlem Lacrosse special, they often point to stories like Sergio Romero’s—stories built on grit, leadership, and a belief that the sport can be a pathway to something bigger.

Sergio, Class of 2024, first picked up a stick through City Lacrosse. When City Lacrosse merged with Harlem Lacrosse, he didn’t just stay involved—he helped build something new. Sergio was one of the foundational members of our high school boys program in Los Angeles, setting a tone of commitment and competitiveness that continues to shape the team today.

Determined to pursue his dream of becoming a college lacrosse player, Sergio transferred to Compton High School for his senior year because his home school did not offer lacrosse. From the moment he arrived, Sergio became a leader and a respected elder within the program. He took control of the defense and taught his teammates things that coaches simply couldn’t—offering insight, toughness, and a perspective earned through experience.

On the field, Sergio was always the first to celebrate with his teammates, encouraging players when they were down, and showing our underclassmen how to battle through adversity. His presence anchored our team, and his leadership helped guide our then second-year program to a 3rd place finish in our conference and the program’s first-ever playoff win.

After his senior season, Sergio completed a postgraduate year at Hebron Academy, continuing to elevate his game and pursue his goal. His hard work and commitment paid off when he signed to play Division III lacrosse at the University of Mount St. Vincent in the Bronx.

Sergio’s journey reflects what Harlem Lacrosse stands for—taking bold steps, creating opportunities, and paving the way for those who come next. His legacy in Los Angeles is already secured, and his future is just beginning.
