Harlem Lacrosse Alumni are Changing the Landscape of College Lacrosse

Earlier this month, the Women’s Lacrosse program at Virginia State University hosted a Fall scrimmage event for HBCUs that included Virginia State University, Howard University, University of the District of Columbia, Delaware State University, and Morgan State University. It was a proud moment for Harlem Lacrosse as we had four alumni (collectively representing our Harlem Lacrosse programs in Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore) participating in the event. It's equally exciting that an Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) event specifically highlighting HBCU lacrosse is now a reality. This is one important step in creating a more equitable and inclusive lacrosse community. It is thrilling to me that current middle school participants from Harlem Lacrosse - Baltimore were able to attend the event in person, and that all of our 1,200 current students can pick up a stick, knowing that someday playing lacrosse at an HBCU is a very realistic opportunity.

Elsewhere around the country, Harlem Lacrosse alums are participating in fall tournaments for more traditional college lacrosse programs as well. Programs like Hobart and William Smith Colleges (M), University at Albany, SUNY (M,W), Brown University (W), Boston University (M), University of Maryland Baltimore County(W), Tufts University (M), Colby College (M), Ithaca College (M,W), Nazareth University (M,W), Bates College (M), Haverford College (M), Ohio Wesleyan University (W) and many others include Harlem Lacrosse alums on their rosters. We’re proud of what these talented and dedicated student-athletes are bringing to their lacrosse programs and campuses, and excited to have them representing Harlem Lacrosse.

Just like those alumni who are helping to build lacrosse traditions at incredible institutions like Virginia State, these students are helping to make the global lacrosse community a richer and more diverse one. Most importantly, each of these collegiate student-athletes are helping to demonstrate to the next generation of aspiring Harlem Lacrosse students that if they want it, college lacrosse is in their reach.
