Donald McKay Girls Wrap Up Inaugural Season with Emotional “Senior Day”

Every high school and college athlete is able to recall that feeling that they had at their Senior Day. On May 30th, Donald McKay girls’ Program Director, Coach Mern gave her 8th graders a taste of Senior Day, before the last game of the season.

Harlem Lacrosse established girls and boys programs at the Donald McKay School in East Boston in the Fall of 2018. Program directors Coach Mern and Coach Chuck immersed themselves in the school community and introduced the sport of lacrosse to many of the students for the first time. Throughout the year, the girls bonded through study halls, lacrosse practices, trips to Duxbury and Harvard, and lacrosse games.

On this night, with the support of Boston Program Directors Coach Maddy and Coach Greta, the 5th, 6th and 7th grade student-athletes from our programs at Mildred Avenue, Joseph Lee, and Donald McKay, surrounded Coach Mern and her six 8th graders.  Words of encouragement were spoken, tears were shed, and flowers were handed out to celebrate the success and the leadership that the 8th grade girls brought to the inaugural Donald Mckay team.

All the Boston Program Directors hope that this pre-game ceremony will motivate the current and future 8th graders on the Harlem Lacrosse - Boston teams to work hard to have a Senior Day of their own.
