P.S./M.S. 149 the Sojourner Truth School Returns to UVA

On February 28, the boys from HLL's Truth team embarked on their annual University of Virginia Learning and Leadership Trip. After being treated to dinner by Pasture restaurant in Charlottesville on Friday night, the boys had a full schedule of academic and athletic activities ahead of them. Highlighted by the team’s highly anticipated workshop with the UVA School of Law’s Black Law Students Association, this year’s trip offered students another chance to learn how to overcome obstacles and set new goals for themselves. While at UVA, the Truth boys attended a panel led by third year law student and HLL Board Member Tunji Williams, listened to a talk by Prof. Barbara Armacost and toured the campus.

The Truth boys had the opportunity of a lifetime as they competed in an intra-squad scrimmage during halftime of the nationally televised Virginia-Syracuse game. Playing confidently in front of nearly 5,000 fans, the Truth boys received a warm ovation from the excited crowd. After their game, they cheered on the 'Hoos as they defeated Syracuse 17-12. The following morning, the boys played their first spring game against Western Albermarle Lacrosse Club. The tight contest resulted in the Truth boys' first win of the season. We are thankful to have connected with our new lacrosse partners and honored to be a part of the University of Virginia community!
