Will Barrow, UVA Men’s Lacrosse ‘08

Will Barrow Memorial Scholarship program

The Virginia Men’s Lacrosse Team is proud to announce the 13th annual Will Barrow Memorial Fundraiser to honor our 2008 team captain. The first $5,000 raised will be directed to The HELP Line, a free and confidential resource for UVA students. The remaining funds will be used for the Will Barrow Leadership Awards, which provide tuition support to Harlem Lacrosse players pursuing their post-secondary education.

Max Pomper, Virginia class of 2010, founded the Will Barrow Flag Football Tournament in 2009. Since then, the tournament has grown into an annual fundraiser that both celebrates his teammate’s life and significantly impacts the HELP Line as well as Harlem Lacrosse.

Following the incredible success of last year’s fundraiser, 17 Harlem Lacrosse student-athletes were awarded a total of $37,750.  Student-athletes from the organization apply for the scholarship and are chosen based on merit. These student-athletes embody Will’s deep commitment to team-building and leadership.

Said Joel Embray, who received the Leadership Award this year and is currently a freshman at Connecticut College: “This Will Barrow Leadership Award not only helps bring peace of mind financially but sends a positive message too. It tells me that people believe in me and are invested in my success just as much as I am. It’s a comforting experience to have a support system such as this.”

In 2021, the fundraiser tripled its previous fundraising high for a total of $51,800.

Thank you from all of us at UVA Lacrosse!

When my teammates and I set out to organize this event in honor of our teammate Will, never in a million years could we have imagined that this fundraising endeavor would have grown to the size it has today. Between the funds raised for the Charlottesville HELP Line, and the Scholarship Awards created in Will’s name within Harlem Lacrosse, the support that this event has received is just incredible. To think that Will’s memory lives on in Charlottesville and his life is celebrated each year makes my teammates and I very proud.
