Coach Carly Comes Back

In October, the girls at Young Achievers Math and Science Pilot School in Boston, got a surprise visit from their former coach, Coach Carly Randall. Coach Carly started the girls lacrosse program at Young Achievers in the Fall of 2017 after graduating with an education degree and playing lacrosse at Syracuse University. Originally from Rochester, New York, Coach Carly came to Harlem Lacrosse with a love of coaching and a passion for education.

“Playing sports at young ages is SO important for kids because it helps build so many life skills. The leadership that is learned from playing a sport is unmatchable. But sports, and Harlem Lacrosse specifically, opens up a whole set of opportunities and networks for kids who otherwise may not have had those opportunities.”

During Coach Carly’s visit, we had planned an all team Fall fun practice to celebrate her coming back as well as the end of the Fall season. The girls shot for candy at goals, played dress up hungry hungry hippo, painted pumpkins, and enjoyed some pizza. This was the first time all girls 5th-8th grade were together, and the veteran players did not disappoint Coach Carly with their developed leadership skills.

“During our shooting for candy drill, Nevaeh literally was standing next to a fifth grader showing her the proper way to shoot. I was surprised to hear and see that Asheree is so committed to the team and also becoming a great leader for the younger girls. She's been a natural since the beginning but lacked commitment and trust. With this increased commitment and leadership, she will go such a long way!”

Now working as the Assistant Women’s Lacrosse Coach at Wesleyan University, Coach Carly is still very committed to staying involved in Harlem Lacrosse and together we plan to do more enrichment and lacrosse activities together. As the new Program Director at Young Achievers, I am grateful to have Coach Carly’s guidance and assistance in this transition.
