Earned experiences are key to student Participation & Retention
Harlem Lacrosse uses the sport we love to help the kids we love chase their boldest dreams. Our model is based on educational coaching, lacrosse instruction and competition, social emotional enrichment, and post-secondary pathing support.
When Harlem Lacrosse participants are meeting their educational and athletic responsibilities throughout the school year, they are able to participate in enrichment activities that support our model. Students go on day and weekend field trips and compete in lacrosse tournaments throughout Southern California. The school year culminates with the top 100 boys and girls attending Camp Alex : a 3 night, 4 day overnight camp at the Thatcher School in Ojai, California. Students swim, hike, play lacrosse and participate in personal growth and development sessions.
Camp Alex has significantly boosted program retention rates, fostering a sense of belonging, camaraderie, and continuity among student-athletes. Attendance at camp also reinforces the relationship students have with their Program Director.
The impact of Camp Alex on Harlem Lacrosse-LA has been remarkable:
-
Academic Success: Camp Alex's holistic approach has positively impacted academic performance, improving focus, discipline, and time management skills. Harlem Lacrosse students have an average attendance rate of over 91% with an average GPA of over 80%.
-
Leadership Development: The “Leadership Academy” at Camp Alex has led to the cultivation of strong leadership qualities among participants, evident both on and off the lacrosse field.
Relationships and Community Building: Lasting relationships among participants, coaches, and families have extended beyond the camp experience, creating a supportive network for student-athletes that fuels impactful outcomes.
Curiosity and Personal Growth: Outdoor activities and diverse programming at the camp have sparked curiosity and a love for learning, contributing to overall personal growth.

Lacrosse Instruction and Competition
Everything we do is build around the power of the sport of lacrosse. Individually, lacrosse develops physical, emotional, and relational strength. Collectively, lacrosse builds power and encourages resilience and teamwork.
Sports activity helps children develop and improve cognitive skills. The Aspen Institute reports that physically active children achieve up to 40% higher test scores than their peers, and are 15% more likely to matriculate to college.
According to the US Department of Education finding, high school athletes are more likely than non-athletes to attend college and get degrees, and team captains and most valuable players achieve in school at even higher rates.
Student athletes are more likely to expect to graduate from a four-year college (73% girls, 59% boys) compared to non-athletes (67% girls, 53% boys), according to data collected for the Healthy Sport Index (Women’s Sports Foundation, 2018)

Harlem Lacrosse alumni have gone on to attend over 200 colleges and universities, and have earned over $85 million in scholarships since 2012.
Post-Secondary Pathing Support:
Personal post-secondary pathing is one of the unique aspects of our model. Every Harlem Lacrosse high school senior participates in a full intake process, which leads to guidance surrounding crafting college lists, gathering supporting documentation, gathering letters of recommendation, and successfully charting a post-secondary path.
College Athletic Achievements: Alumni like Cemary Chavez, an early Camp Alex participant, is set to join Xavier University as a D1 Women’s Lacrosse Player as she starts her college journey!
